Campaigning
The CRRN seeks to campaign for positive change in government and local policy regarding the resettlement of refugees. Our desire is to ensure that Cornwall leads the way as an example of how the resettlement of refugees can be mutually beneficial for all.
To ensure that Cornwall responds positively to the crisis of our time, and that we do all that we can to provide refuge and sanctuary to those most in need, we aim to celebrate good news stories of how the resettlement of refugees can indeed shape and change Cornwall for the better.
Cornwall Council has made a terrific start on this initiative. This is to be celebrated, and we should encourage it to continue. We also can use the authority of our collective experience to lobby the Home Office to make good on its commitments, and to increase its resettlement targets. National Government generally excuses its inertia on practical grounds, perhaps because there can be no moral excuses. These practical excuses can best be countered by practical success stories. Our communication in this area needs to be sensitive to the privacy of individuals and mindful of the potential for mixed reception in some communities.
